Nick D'Arcy's doing the laps ... for radio

Instead of swimming at the Beijing Olympics, controversial swimmer Nick D'Arcy will now be reporting on them.

The national butterfly champion has landed a job at the Queensland Sunshine Coast radio station Hot FM 91.1, where he will join the breakfast team of Ronnie Stanton, Todd Widdicombe and Sami Muirhead for a morning round-up of the games.

D'Arcy was kicked off the Olympic team after allegedly assaulting former swimmer, Simon Cowley at a Sydney nightclub in March this year.

Last month the Court of Arbitration for Sport made its final decision to not allow him to compete at the Games after deciding he had brought the Olympic team and the sport into disrepute.

Rick Chapman, general manager of the group which owns Hot 91 FM, Prime Radio, said D'Arcy would be on the airwaves from 6am this Monday.

"He's used to getting up early, he's done the hard yards and I know he's looking forward to it," Mr Chapman said.

He said the network was happy to make use of D'Arcy's first-hand insight into competing at the elite level.

"That was what we thought, he's a local guy for a start. We just thought that it's a period where TV normally dominates so this is a point of difference," he said.

Mr Chapman said he acknowledged that the appointment could draw some criticism from those who may deem it inappropriate to hire the young man while he faces a serious assault charge.

"We thought [criticism] could be part of it but we are doing this for one reason only and that's to provide a point of difference for our audience," he said.

"I am sure there will be people out there who have a different view of things but we are happy to see him moving on, doing different things and he's looking forward to it so we are excited about that."
