Callander's team coming through with flying colours

19/07/2008 12:00:01 AM

VIEWERS of thoroughbred racing channel TVN today can forgive Sydney host Richard Callander should he get excited if Universal Colours makes it successive wins in the last race at Rosehill.

Callander's wife, Kaye, is the managing part-owner in the horse raced with friends and other media identities, including former Sky Channel and ESPN and now Fox Sports host Ryan Phelan.

Universal Colours is one of eight horses Richard and Kaye Callander are involved with and the recent months have provided a good run of success.

"It's not about getting rich but if a good horse comes along then it's all the better," Richard Callander said yesterday. "We've been lucky to have a couple of city winners lately with Bellagio Wynn and then Universal Colours winning two weeks ago."

Gerald Ryan trains Universal Colours, which will be ridden by Rod Quinn today. Callander's good friend, Rosehill trainer Chris Waller, prepares Bellagio Wynn, Baby Casino and Grizz, which goes around in the second race at Rosehill today, while Melbourne horseman Clinton McDonald has Rolling Stock.

Stradbroke Handicap-winning trainer Tracey Bartley has Hot Flushes in his care for Callander and that filly is raced in partnership with Christine Walsh, a TVN producer and fiancee of jockey Hugh Bowman, as well as Sloane Boss, wife of jockey Glen Boss.

"We don't syndicate the horses we buy, we just invite friends of mine and my wife's into the horses with us," Callander explained. "Everyone has an equal say in what happens and that's the most important thing as we all put the same amount of money in. At the end of the day it's all about having fun.

"It gives everyone an opportunity to go out to the races when we have a runner and even our kids get involved. We quite often take our two little girls, Jessica and Brooke, down to Chris Waller's stables and they feed the horses carrots. They love the involvement as well.

"Not enough people go and enjoy the aspect of being a part-owner but we all certainly do."

Callander said he expected Universal Colours to perform well today and warned the best was yet to come from the lightly raced three-year-old by AJC Australian Derby winner Universal Prince.

"He is just starting to hit his straps," he said.

"Gerald Ryan has always had an opinion of him and now that he is stepping up over a bit of ground he is showing his best.

"Rod Quinn rode him a treat to win at Rosehill a fortnight ago over 1900m and while the horse is back to 1800m on Saturday he is up slightly in class.

"But he has drawn well and I'm sure Rod will give him a good ride. Rod is one of the top three jockeys in Sydney, in my opinion, and we've had a bit of luck together.

"He's had one ride on Universal Colours for a win and one ride on Bellagio Wynn at Randwick last month and he turned in a 10-out-of-10 display to win on him."

Callander purchased a Mossman yearling at the Magic Millions sale earlier this year and a Red Ransom yearling at Easter and said he was looking forward to the upcoming season when they will be in action.

And Bellagio Wynn has returned to Waller's stable after a short period in the spelling paddock and is being aimed at some better-class staying events in the spring.

"Bellagio Wynn came back into Chris's stable last week and will trial in mid-August," Callander said.

"He has done a great job for us having won seven of 22 starts and more than $240,000 in prizemoney.

"Chris thinks he deserved a crack at the better-class races this spring so we'll see how far he can go."
